General Electric built two steam turbine locomotives in 1938, for delivery and testing by the Union Pacific. Numbered #1 and #2, these streamlined locomotives were fueled by bunker fuel oil. Designed for 125 mph speeds, they were delivered to the U.P. in April 1939. As with any new concept locomotives, the locomotives suffered from serious reliability problems and relatively high maintenance costs. They were returned to G.E. in June 1939 and renumbered GE-1 and GE-2. Painted grey and black, the locomotives were tested by the New York Central in 1942, and again returned to G.E. During the railroad power shortage of 1943, they were utilized by the Great Northern as #1 and #2. Sadly, the units were scrapped before the end of World War II.
